Pope Leo XIV’s address to the Cortes, the Spanish parliament, which applauded at length. “Dignity, justice and the common good must be the measure of social relations,” said the Pope, “at both national and international levels.” Inviting MPs to take a broader view in their work as legislators, Leo XIV devoted a significant part of his speech to migration, stating that ‘no nation alone can face a challenge of this magnitude’, which must combine hospitality with a real possibility of integration, whilst at the same time working to prevent people from being forced to leave their own country. 

Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the world’s oldest bank, is at the centre of a dispute between Banco BPM and the national banking giant Intesa Sanpaolo. After markets closed, Banco BPM put forward a proposal for a merger on equal terms. Shortly afterwards, this morning, the national banking giant Intesa Sanpaolo launched a public tender offer and exchange for the entire share capital of the Siena-based bank. The markets rewarded MPS with a sharp rise in its share price. 

In sport, Kimi Antonelli secured his fifth consecutive victory in the Formula 1 Grand Prix yesterday in Monte Carlo. Meanwhile, Flavio Cobolli suffered defeat in the fifth set of the Roland Garros final. For Cobolli, however, the overall outcome remains largely positive: he has entered the top ten of the ATP rankings.
