Our daily news in English. The boats making up the Global Sumud Flotilla were seized overnight. These unarmed vessels, laden with food and medical supplies intended to break the blockade of Gaza, were boarded and damaged by the Israeli navy, which detained dozens of activists – including 24 Italians – all in international waters near Crete, Greece. The government has condemned the incident, which took place in international waters, and called for the immediate release of those detained. The opposition has described it as an act of criminal piracy and strongly urged the government to intervene to secure their release.
The case of the Garlasco murder, which took place almost 20 years ago and for which the victim’s then boyfriend, Chiara Poggi, is currently serving the final stages of a 16-year sentence. The defence investigations carried out by his lawyers a year ago led to the case being reopened. The Pavia Public Prosecutor’s Office believes that the perpetrator of the crime is Andrea Sempio, a friend of Chiara’s younger brother. The motive is said to be the rejection of a sexual advance. Sempio denies all charges.
